Firm Ground Football Boots

Firm ground football boots are what most people picture when they think of a pair of boots. Moulded studs, built for natural grass that is dry or only slightly damp, which covers a big chunk of the English season once the pitches settle.

We pull FG and FG/MG boots from UK retailers into one place so you can see who has your pair cheapest. Filter by brand, collection or price, and every pair below is a firm ground model.

What makes a boot firm ground?

It is all in the soleplate. FG boots have fixed, moulded studs, usually a mix of conical and bladed shapes, that push into firm grass and give you grip when you twist and turn. They are lighter than soft ground boots because there is no metal and no screw-in sockets to carry around.

FG or FG/MG?

FG/MG stands for firm ground and multi-ground. The studs are a touch shorter and more rounded so the boot copes with artificial grass as well as natural pitches. If you play matches on grass and train on 3G, an FG/MG pair is a sensible middle ground. If you are mostly on artificial pitches, a dedicated pair of AG football boots will grip better and is kinder on your joints.

When FG is the wrong choice

Once a grass pitch turns heavy and muddy in midwinter, FG studs struggle to bite and you will find yourself slipping. That is when soft ground boots earn their keep. Some brands also do not cover wear caused by using boots on the wrong surface, so it is worth checking the retailer's notes before you buy.

How much should I spend?

Boot ranges come in tiers. Club and Academy models are the cheapest and are plenty for casual and Sunday league players. Pro models add a better upper and a closer fit, and Elite boots are the versions you see in the Premier League. The same boot can vary by £20 or more between shops, so check the comparison before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear firm ground boots on 3G?

Many people do, and FG/MG boots are designed for it. Pure FG studs can grip too hard in the rubber crumb of a 3G pitch, so if you play on it often an AG pair is the better option.

Are firm ground boots allowed on astro?

Most venues with older sand-based astro do not allow studded boots of any kind. Astro turf trainers are what you need there.

What does FG mean on football boots?

FG means firm ground. It tells you the soleplate is made for dry or slightly wet natural grass.

Do firm ground boots fit differently from other versions?

The upper is normally the same across FG, AG and SG versions of a model, so your size should not change. The soleplate is the only real difference.
